If you have BHD syndrome, we suggest the following:
- Consult a pulmonologist to arrange a CT scan so you can determine if you have lung cysts.
- Be sure to have your own emergency plan in mind for getting to a hospital or doctor as soon as possible in case of a lung collapse.
- Take a medical history with you when you travel, along with a description of the pneumothorax as a manifestation of BHD. Portable Health Cards are available.
- There are situations which may increase the risk of a pneumothorax:
-flying in unpressurised aeroplanes;
-consult with your pulmonologist to determine if commercial flights are a safe option for you;
-scuba diving;
-sports and strenuous activity at high altitude;
-smoking.
